Mindful Heart Hamilton is a sangha, or community, of people from all backgrounds and faiths who come together to practice mindfulness meditation. We follow the Zen Buddhist teachings of Vietnamese monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. On Wednesday evenings from 7 - 9pm, we gather at Inland Island Community Wellness Centre to support one another in cultivating joy and peace in the present moment through mindful breathing, mindful walking, deep listening, and dharma sharing. Everyone is welcome.

When we breathe together as a sangha, the energies of mindfulness and concentration are strengthened in us, and we are able to care for our negative feelings, and other habit energies, with compassion and loving kindness. Because we are caring for ourselves, we begin to see positive changes in our lives and in our relationships. Caring for ourselves is also caring for others. Breathing in the sangha we breathe as one.

In our practice, we do not ask our bodies to do anything that will cause physical pain. We sit or lie down in a comfortable position, and do not judge ourselves for our wandering minds. Instead, we smile to our wandering minds, and bring our awareness back to our bodies, to the present moment.

If you would like to know more about our practice, there are many wonderful books to read, but practice itself is the most important teacher. We can only truly learn what we experience ourselves. It is possible to join our sangha at any time, as often as you like. There is a 5-minute break in the middle of practice so you may use the washroom, enter practice late, or leave early - whatever is best for you.

At present we are collecting donations to buy enough zafus (meditation cushions) for our group. If you are able to contribute, the community will benefit. If you are not able to contribute right now, please do not hesitate to come practice with us. Until we have enough funds to buy cushions, we offer chairs for those who would like to sit, and we recommend bringing a blanket or a towel to kneel or lie down on.

Mindful Heart Hamilton is seeking volunteers to help maintain and grow the sangha. If you would like to offer your service to this community, please email mindfulhearthamilton@gmail.com.
